Placement Interviews
Placement interviews are held for students who:
- already have some knowledge of a language and
- do not clearly fall into the categories or streams of students in each program.
The school has streams in Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Japanese and Spanish.
Alternative entry points (courses) for non-beginners in Russian and Korean are also available (students should contact the course coordinator for advice).
Placement interviews usually take place during Orientation Week and full details for each language can be found in the School's Orientation Week program.
During semester time, please contact the appropriate School Discipline Coordinator for the language concerned.
Important notice for all language students
Students wishing to complete a major or extended major in a language must adhere to the official Program List of the Bachelor of Arts. This specifies, for each stream, the courses that a student must do, including gateway courses (compulsory introductory courses), capstone courses (compulsory advanced courses) and electives. Students cannot mix courses from different streams.
Students who do not adhere to this course list (for instance because they start in second semester) will need to apply for a non-standard major. Non-standard majors can only be approved by the Director of Studies of the Faculty of Arts on the recommendation of the language program coordinator.
