How much (or little) Japanese can I study?

You may study Japanese courses as an elective in your degree (i.e. one or more courses outside your major area of study), or you can complete a major (i.e. 8 courses/#16 units) or extended major (i.e. 12 courses/#24 units) in Japanese. You can then continue on to do an Honours degree or postgraduate studies (Master or Doctoral degree) in Japanese.

Where do I begin?

There are different streams and entry points depending on your learning background in Japanese:
  • introductory level, that is no previous knowledge of Japanese - Stream A
  • for students who have studied Year 12 Japanese at school and spent less than six months in Japan - Stream B
  • for advanced students of Japanese who have completed Year 12 Japanese and have also spent more than six months studying in Japan or equivalent – Stream C
Separate courses and pathways apply for students in each category. See the University's Programs and Courses website for details of courses that are required in each stream. There is a guide to the initial courses in each stream below.

What if I’m still not sure which stream to start in?

If you are unsure which initial course to enrol in, consult with a staff member of the Japanese Program. You may need to sit a placement interview. Placement interviews are held before the beginning of each semester. You can find out the timing of these by contacting the school office in February for Semester 1 or July for Semester 2. Teachers will also check the backgrounds of new students and their language proficiency at the start of the course.

In Stream A, what is the difference between the ‘Concentrated’ and ‘Standard’ courses?

The concentrated courses enable a quicker progression in Japanese by studying two courses in a semester rather than one. The concentrated courses are only available on the St Lucia campus. The standard courses can be taken at St Lucia or Gardens Point.

Are there any courses for native speakers of Japanese?

There is only one course in which native speakers of Japanese or those with considerable proficiency in the language may enrol. That is JAPN3600 ‘Language and Society in Japan: for native speakers’. To take any of the other Japanese courses, prior approval must be obtained from the relevant course coordinator.

Can I study in Japan as part of my degree?

If you are studying towards a major or extended major in Japanese you can apply for a university exchange to one of over 20 of UQ partner universities in Japan. On return, you can apply for credit for the courses that you passed while overseas. Consult with your Japanese teacher about this.
