Student Information
Promoting intercultural communication and understanding, the School of Languages and Comparative Cultural Studies is dedicated to excellence in the teaching and research of major world languages and the cultures in which they are spoken, in applied linguistics and in translating and interpreting.
Nine languages are available to UQ students:
| Chinese | French | German | Indonesian | Italian |
| Japanese | Korean | Russian | Spanish |
All these languages can be studied at beginners through to advanced level. Programs in these languages are available to undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Linguistics: undergraduate students can complete a major or extended major in Linguistics.
Applied Linguistics is a postgraduate program, but there are some undergraduate courses in Applied Linguistics.
Formal qualifications in Translation and Interpreting (Chinese or Japanese) are available at postgraduate level only, although most of our undergraduate language programs offer introductory courses in translation or interpreting.
Although most of our students are enrolled in a degree program, the school also welcomes other students:
- Cross-institutional students
- Students from the wider community can study individual courses through the Community Access Program.
- Year 12 students can take individual courses through the Enhanced Studies Program.
- University students from countries outside Australia can sample school courses through the International Study Experience Program.
