Awards and Prizes

Delegation of European Commission Language Excellence Prize
The prize of a Book Voucher to the value of $1000 and a certificate is awarded to the student who, upon completion of their major achieved the highest academic results, in a major related to the Languages of the European Union; French, German, Spanish or Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies.

IML Language Prizes
Established in 2002 and maintained by an annual gift from the Institute of Modern Languages.
Each year the Institute of Modern Languages awards three $500 prizes to first year students of Spanish, Chinese and Korean, and a third year student of Indonesian. Prizes are awarded on the basis of grades in Spanish, Chinese, Korean and Indonesian.
Established in 2002 and maintained by an annual gift from the Institute of Modern Languages.

The Kate McNaughton of Roma Scholarship
This scholarship was founded in 1931 by gifts under the will of Duncan McNaughton, of Roma.
Two scholarships are awarded to students about to enter the final year of their first Honours degree course within the Faculty of Arts. They are awarded on the basis of merit and general suitability.

Mary Alison Miles Munro Scholarships
This scholarship was founded in 1936 by pecuniary gifts from Mr Simon Edwin Munro, Mrs Helena Mary Whitehouse and Mrs Jessie Hamon, in memory of Mrs Mary Alison Miles Munro.
Two scholarships are awarded each year to students of the Bachelor of Arts on the basis of proficiency shown in the first two semesters of a modern foreign language.

Endeavour Language Teacher Fellowship (ELTF)
The Endeavour Language Teacher Fellowships (ELTF) are an Australian Government initiative for trainee language teachers to improve their language and cultural skills through an intensive short-term study program. The fellowships will, among other things, provide practising language teachers and trainee language teachers with the opportunity to improve their knowledge, skills and understanding of the languages and cultures about which they are teaching.

Indonesian
Queensland Government and Faculty of Arts Indonesian Language Scholarship
The scholarship was established in 2010 and is maintained by a gift from the Queensland Government and the Faculty of Arts.
The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage and assist meritorious students undertaking studies in the Indonesian language to continue their studies. Available to domestic students who have completed at least four units in Indonesian language courses. Selection is based on academic achievement in Indonesian language courses undertaken by the applicant, the interest the applicant demonstrates in Indonesian language and culture, personal qualities (including leadership potential), and any other matter that is considered to be relevant to the applicant's future professional success in the Indonesian language discipline.
Value: $2,000 for one year, subject to academic progress and full-time enrolment.

The Mabel Pingel Scholarship.
This scholarship was established in 1991 by a gift from Mrs Mabel Barnett, nee Pingel, who graduated from the University in 1935.
This scholarship is awarded annually to a student who has finished the Bachelor of Arts degree and who is starting an honours degree in Fench. It is awarded on the basis of academic merit.

French Government Assistantships
The French Government offers a number of awards to Australian teachers of French, or final year students who propose teaching French in the future. Students take up positions as Assistant(e) in French High Schools for eight months from 1 October each year. A living allowance and assistance with accommodation and medical expenses are provided.

The G.M. Grassie Memorial Prize
This prize was established in 1984 by a gift from Dr and Mrs M.C. Grassie and Dr S.L. Grassie in memory of Graeme, their son and brother.
It is available to students enrolling in an appropriate program of study leading to a PhD or MA after having completed a BA with honours or its equivalent in French Studies from this University. If no eligible students enrol in an appropriate PhD or MA program, the prize is to be awarded to the student completing the BA (Honours) program in French studies who achieves the highest GPA in his or her honours year.

The GM Bonnin Memorial Scholarship
This Prize was established in 1975 as a memorial to the late Dr G.M. Bonnin, by his former colleagues, students and friends.
Two scholarships are awarded annually to one day and one evening student with the best results in Introductory German Language 2.

The Keith Leopold Prize
This prize was established in 1986, by former colleagues and students, as a tribute to Professor Keith Leopold in recognition of the valuable services rendered by him in the teaching of German.
It is awarded annually to the student who shows the greatest proficiency in GRMN2130 Translation from German.

The Karl and Frieda Reber Memorial Scholarship
The scholarship was established in 1962 by a legacy from Mrs Hilda Maria Reber, who died in 1958.
It is awarded annually to the student who, in completing the requirements for the degree, showed the greatest proficiency in level 3 German courses and is proceeding to the Honours program in German Language and Literature as a full-time student.
If in any year there is no student of sufficient merit for an award under rule 1, the scholarship shall be awarded to the full time student in the advanced stream who has shown the greatest proficiency in their second year courses (GRMN3010 and GRMN3020) and who enrols in third year courses both semesters in the following year (GRMN3110 and GRMN3120).
The scholarship may be terminated by the senate if in its opinion the scholar is not satisfactorily pursuing the relevant course.

German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Scholarships
These scholarships provide for at least one year's study at a German University. Up to seventeen scholarships are awarded annually for the whole of Australia. A number of these always go to Queensland graduates from all faculties. The scholarships are normally awarded to recent Honours graduates or to students enrolled in German Studies Honours (IV).

Goethe Institut Scholarship for Dip.Ed. Students
Scholarships are now also on offer for undergraduate students enrolled in Dip.Ed. and German who intend to become teachers of German. The scholarships consist of a two-month language and cultural studies course at one of the Goethe Institutes in Germany, fares to Europe, accommodation and a small living allowance.

In most years the Goethe Institute offers at least five scholarships to enable Queensland teachers of German to spend a long vacation in Germany. The scholarships are normally awarded to graduates (Pass or Honours) who have been teaching German for at least five years.

Scholarships are also offered from time to time for study at a University in German-speaking Switzerland and/or Austria, (usually Zurich or Graz). Information and application via the International Education Office, University of Queensland.

Brisbane Homestay Komazawa Bursary
Established in 1994 and maintained by the income from a fund donated by the Brisbane-Japan Homestay and Friendship Association.
This bursary is awarded annually to enable a student of the University to attend Komazawa University, Japan on a study or exchange program. The Bursary is open to students who have completed at least #4 of Japanese courses in the University.
For study in Japan for Australian citizens aged over 18 in third or later years specialising in Japanese language or culture.
Established in 1994 and maintained by the income from a fund donated by the Brisbane-Japan Homestay and Friendship Association.
This bursary is awarded annually to enable a student of the University to attend Komazawa University, Japan on a study or exchange program. The Bursary is open to students who have completed at least #4 of Japanese courses in the University.

The Nanette Gottlieb Japanese Language Prize
This prize was established in 2013 and funded by an endowment fund created by a gift from Professor Nanette Gottlieb and further subscriptions from the University’s Japanese language community.
The prize will be awarded annually to a student enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts program, showing the greatest proficiency in stream A Japanese, having completed 1st year stream A Japanese and enrolled in 2nd year stream A Japanese.

The prize was established in 2008 and is maintained by an annual donation from The Education Office of the Embassy of Spain in Australia.
Books to the value of $200 and a certificate are awarded to the student enrolled in the BA program in a Spanish-related research area who completed the BA pass program majoring in Spanish, with the highest overall marks in Spanish Language Studies.
The prize was established in 2008 and is maintained by an annual donation from The Education Office of the Embassy of Spain in Australia.

The Queensland Government and The University of Queensland Spanish Language Travel Scholarship
The prize was established in 2011 and is maintained by a gift from the Queensland Government, UQ International and the Faculty of Arts. The scholarship to the value of $2,000 is made available for the purpose of encouraging students undertaking a Spanish language major to participate in the UQ Abroad Program at an official UQ partner university in a Spanish speaking country.
The Application forms will be available mid semester 1 and students can apply for the award, in line with their study abroad application to study abroad in semester 2 of that year or semester 1 of the following year.
