Dr John Beston
Honorary Research Advisor
Email: j.beston@uq.edu.au
Research interests: My interests are divided between contemporary Australian Literature and Old French. I was awarded a Postdoctoral Fellowship at UQ in the English Department to write on Patrick White, and I have a long book on him just released by Sydney University Press now, called PatrickWhite within the Western Literary Tradition. I've published a lot on Australian Literature since 1970 in a number of countries (Australia, US, Canada, UK, France, India). But in interests and skills I'm primarily a linguist (French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian) and increasingly do research on early medieval French (Old French). I published a translation of a long 12C French romance in 2008, called Galeran de Bretagne, and I am completing another group of Old French lais presently.

Dr Mary Laughren
Honorary Research Consultant
Email: m.laughren@uq.edu.au
Research Interests: My current research focuses on the documentation of Australian languages, especially the Warlpiri language of central Australia and the Waanyi language of the Gulf of Carpentaria region straddling the Qld/NT border. I have worked with Robert Hoogenraad and numerous Warlpiri contributers to compile a Warlpiri Picture Dictionary aimed mainly at young Warlpiri people (In press, IAD Press, Alice Springs). I am revising a comprehensive Warlpiri-English Encyclopaedic Dictionary covering four major dialects which will be submitted for publication in print and electronic form in 2011. I am also compiling a dictionary and grammar of Waanyi, in partnership with Gavan Breen. Another area in which I am actively engaged is the recording, audio and video, of traditional Warlpiri songs. This songs documentation project is being carried out in collaboration with Prof. Nicolas Peterson and Dr. Georgia Curran (ANU), with Dr Myfany Turpin (UQ), with Prof. Barbara Glowczewski (Collège de France, Paris) and the participating Warlpiri ritual leaders and Warlpiri people directly involved in educational programs. In addition to reporting on this work in academic publications, we are producing a series of audio and video recordings whose primary intended audience are Warlpiri people. My interest in reconstructing aspects of earlier relationships between Australian languages is reflected in papers I'm preparing for publication on the history of a pattern of complex genitive morphology in northern and western languages, and on the reconstruction of first and second pronoun paradigms in these languages. My most recent publication (Laughren 2010) deals with questions relating to the interface between syntax and lexical semantics as illustrated by complex Warlpiri verbs.

Although my own research focuses on Australian languages, I am actively involved in supervising PhD students based at UQ who are working on aspects of the syntax of varieties of contemporary Arabic spoken in Saudi Arabia and have supervised the work of recent PhD graduates (2009/10) on aspects of the syntax of Mauritian Creole and Moroccan Berber. My supervisions have also included topics relating to Warlpiri language and ethnography researched by students at UQ and ANU.
