Call for Papers

Call for papers has closed: In any form of communication, be it intercultural, intracultural or interpersonal, power plays an important role. The dynamics of conscious or unconscious misuse of this power often results in the creation of discriminatory and marginalising discourses that affect the lives of those deprived of that power. The purpose of the symposium is to explore discourses of stigma and exclusion in (cross-) cultural contexts. By critically engaging with narratives of social exclusion and marginalisation in different contexts, we aim to show the many and varied experiences of stigma and exclusion and to elucidate how discourses of stigma and otherness are created, contested and negotiated in (cross-) cultural settings. We also aim to explore categorizations that lead to stigmatisation and discrimination in its lived realities.

We encourage submissions exploring any of the following themes:

  • Heterosexism
  •  Political, social or cultural stigma/exclusion
  • Hate speech
  • Racism
  • Refugees and border anxieties
  • Exterminationist/genocidal discourse
  • Health related stigma and exclusion
  • Disability and pathology
  • Trauma and violence
  • Critical whiteness

Any other topic which engages with the themes of stigma and exclusion.

We welcome proposals for standard paper presentations (typically 20 minutes) and for thematic panels comprising three presenters. Paper presentations should include an abstract of no more than 250 words, 3 – 4 keywords, the speaker's full name, title, contact details, institutional affiliation as well as a short biography of no more than 150 words. Panel submissions should include a short description of the panel theme in addition to abstracts and speakers' details.

All submissions should be emailed to discourse.symposium@uq.edu.au by 15 October 2012. Acceptances will be notified by 30 October 2012.
The CFP deadline has now been extended to 15 October 2012.
The conference convenors are actively negotiating a special issue of a journal on the conference theme. Presenters will be invited to submit a written version of their paper by 1 March 2013. Submission of a manuscript does not guarantee inclusion in the special issue: a limited number of articles will be selected through a rigorous peer review process.

Registration
Fees are $70 for staff/waged and $55 for postgraduates/unwaged attendees, payable via the online registration service on the conference website (registrations will open in early November).
