- My current research interests focus upon the evolving use of new technologies in the teaching and learning of second or foreign languages, with a particular emphasis on pedagogy, design and evaluation. My publications reflect these interests generally and more specifically. For example, my book with Glenn Stockwell, CALL Dimensions, and my paper, ‘Technologies in use for second language learning’ in the Modern Language Journal both provide an overview of theoretical thinking and technology applications across the language areas and skills. Similarly the WorldCALL publications, past and present, reflect the broader picture as I engage with the topic internationally. More specific interests relate to particular languages. In Italian, I have worked with staff on developing a variety of applications including mobile learning and blogs (see work with Claire Kennedy). In Chinese, I have been working on distance education techniques and teacher education (see work with Yuping Wang). The work on teacher education is represented also more broadly in the book, Teacher Education in CALL, with Philip Hubbard (Benjamins, 2006).
- My ARC Linkage grant provided an avenue to develop research in ab initio language teaching in Australian Universities, again with a particular interest in new technologies. This work, in turn, led me to want to discover what exactly was happening in this domain in high schools, and prompted the research study with Independent Schools, Queensland. The ARC Discovery grant also fed into this process as I sought, with others, to understand more fully the processes of literacy development via new technologies. More recently, using conversational analysis techniques, I am attempting to understand these processes with more precision still at the micro-level (see work with Rod Gardner). In sum, through my research, I am endeavouring to both design and evaluate CALL programs effectively, and to know more about the learners’ experience as they use these new language learning tools, both within the educational institution and at a distance.

- 2006 - present WorldCALL: Chair of WorldCALL, the international association of Organisations focussing on the application of new technologies to language learning. Involvement with all aspects of the organisation of the WorldCALL, 2008 Conference in Fukuoka, Japan including: Choice of venue; Selection of keynotes; Academic program; and Scholarship program. First editor of the recent WorldCALL book (see publications) and Chair of the Steering Committee for the next WorldCALL Conference in Glasgow, 2013 (www.worldcall.org).
- 2009 UNESCO: In March/May 2009 I made two visits to China to lead a four person international expert group to prepare a feasibility study for a Cyber Network for Learning Languages (CNLL) under the auspices of UNESCO. This proposal was approved unanimously at the 182nd meeting of the Executive Council of UNESCO in Paris in September, namely to implement the CNLL with extra-budgetary funds and strongly supported by the government of China.
- 2009 Independent Schools Queensland: I was commissioned to write a report on Technology-Enhanced Language Learning (TELL) for Independent Schools Queensland (ISQ). 59 schools were involved in the study. ISQ will act upon the recommendations presented in the report in 2010. In addition this report has been distributed to all independent schools in Queensland and the Association of Independent Schools in other states and territories; it has been posted on the ISQ website, and a copy has been sent to the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) in Canberra.
