Why study Chinese?

 

Chinese language is the oldest language still being used nowadays. The Chinese speaking population is currently the largest in the world. It is the official language in mainland China, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Taiwan. It is also one of the official languages in the United Nations. In Australia, the Chinese population is one of the Map of Chinese Languagelargest ethnic communities. Chinese language is an essential tool to interact with the Chinese people. It is also the key to the treasures of an 8000 years old civilization which can enrich our life in many ways.

In recent years China has played an increasingly active and significant role in world culture, economy, and politics and has established strong ties with Australia. Chinese language has become a key to the understanding of a new power rising in the Asia-Pacific region which can have significant influence in Australia’s future.

 



Chinese pathways
There are four pathways (streams) for students of Chinese.

Chinese courses
Chinese courses can be taken as part of a major or double major in Chinese or as electives.

Other courses
These courses are taught in English.
